Master lost sector not dropping exotics.
I was running legend lost sectors today (not master) and while the average exotic drop rate is lower (~25%) I was getting cores left and right as well. I got several legendary, no rares, and occasionally nothing. Though that might been caused due to lag/delay as the pop up for champ rewards:platinum would show up 5-7 seconds later.

Platinum is the only way to get the exotics from the Legend/Master Lost Sectors. It follows the same reward stucture as the Ordeal Nightfalls. Gold or lower usually drop some stuff but I wouldn't expect enhancement materials or exotics. ... Even master is only an exotic every 3-5 runs. IIRC it's ~25% for legend and ~30% for the master version based on some community testing. With that said it is a dice roll every time so don't succumb to gamblers fallacy. The Lost Sector was designated to drop Helmets. We just got lucky like you. You can run them in a fireteam but exotics only drop on solo clears. You can get exotics, but they will not be that days slot specific nor does it have bad luck protection. To get slot specific and get guaranteed new items you have to run solo.
