Basically, I sort of turned off the option to drop the gems in stacks, which allowed me to drop them one by one. I would drop about 6-8 gems in the box each time which made it go a lot quicker. The white star can only trap up to greater soul. The black star traps a human soul which is equivelant to a grand soul.
