Didn't know what the proper way was. I just file. I only clip my nails then file when they are really long and I need to shorten them significantly. I only file. I usually have longer nails but when they're short I just file. I'll clip to trim back my nails and then file when they're longer. I also prefer to use cotton squares that are usually used in facials for removing product. They tend to have a little bit of a rougher texture and help remove the polish better.
