I know they figured that people would use their older save files, but I really like Serana. I definitely agree with this. I'm not exactly sure what glitch "right after the soul cairn" you are referring to, so I can't comment on that. It's been a while since I've played, but checking the UESP page for Kindred Judgement (the final main quest in the DLC) states that once everything is done and "[if you chose the] Dawnguard side, you can ask Serana to transform you into a Vampire Lord."
