If the top strap (the area of the frame above the cylinder) is checkered and the right side of the barrel is stamped "S&W 357 Magnum", it is a S&W Hand Ejector (pre-Model 27). It could be a "Highway Patrolman" if the right side of the barrel is so stamped the top strap ... The smooth back strap is definitely a Model 58 feature. A real tell on this gun is the juncture between the barrel and frame. The Model 58 frame isn't grooved for a barrel rib and is also lower than the barrel rib on a target sighted barrel. I have a Model 58 that was machined for an adjustable rear sight and a Model 57 barrel installed.

My pistol also came with the white plastic part and shows signs of scratches and worn-out. It appears to have been refinished but not by S&W at some point. A good cleaning and treatment for any rusting and it should make a good shooter.
