May 11, 2012. #1. Since Black Hills "declassified" the 5.56mm 77OTM (Mk262 mod1) and allowed its commercial sale, I get the question about the difference between 223 and 5.56mm quite often. Black Hills no longer loads different bullets for the 77gr in 223/556, EVERYTHING is the 77gr Sierra SMK with cannelure(as used in the Mk262 mod1).

I brought my M16A4 to the range to try out America's Ammunition Company (AAC) match ammo.I had previously shot Black Hills 77gr OTM and IMI Razor Core 77gr H... I tested 7 different factory loads in zero wind, one of them was the AAC 77gr OTM, another was the AAC 77gr Sierra SMK. Averaging multiple groups per load, the "in-house" 77gr OTM was 1.317", the 77gr Sierra was 0.646". I also shot AAC 77gr TMK, which averaged 0.740". The different Hornady loads tested in the middle.
My ever-present GP truck gun is a 10.0"/10.3"/10.5" M4 carbine with an M4 can attached. TAC at 5.56MM NATO pressure works very well under the 77GR. SMK in 10" class barrels. It is fast (2450 FPS from 10.3" MK18 w M4 can) and its accurate, on par with 77GR. PSA seems to be changing the game now with the AAC ammunition that uses the correct 9377G bullet, at 2700 fps, at a tremendous bargain price. IMO the most important question that needs to be answered is whether the box spec of 2700 fps is referenced to an 18", 20" or 24" barrel.
