A good caster should be able to cast 50' to 60' sitting in a float tube with a 9' 5 or 6 weight. But the reality, as Mojo mentioned, is that one rarely needs to make that cast over 40'. In river fishing, the main advantage of the 10' rod is line control. It allows you to keep less line on the water for a dead drift.

CTS out of New Zealand builds some very nice fast glass blanks, and there are plenty of builders around to build one if you don't want to do it yourself. Of course, the Epics and Orvis Superfine Glass are great also. For somebody looking for a faster glass rod, there are many fine examples available today.

It kind of depends on where your sympathies lie. The G2 is the better of two (G2 and GS) for dry flies, which relegates the GS to the second-best dry fly rod ever made.
